Another Devastating (and Preventable) High Rise Façade Fire Erupts in Abbco Tower in Sharjah, UAE

Here we go again!

On May 5, at about 9:00 pm, yet another massive fire rushed up the flammable cladding of a high rise building–this time in the 49-story Abbco Tower in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. According to the Gulf News, twelve people were injured in the fire, five of them rushed to the hospital.

The Abbco Tower blaze is the latest of numerous devastating fires which are either caused or massively exacerbated by flammable cladding used on buildings’ exteriors–not only in the United Arab Emirates, but around the globe.

Like so many people around the world, we at Unifire are shocked that governments are failing to take meaningful and rapid action to address the flammable cladding on high rise buildings. This problem has been well known for many years, and long before the infamous Grenfell Tower fire in London in 2017.

The lack of swift governmental action is particularly regrettable in light of the fact that there is at least one technical solution that is economical, available for rapid deployment, and which is specifically designed to combat exactly this type of fire–Tyco Fire Protective Products’ SPRAYSAFE Autonomous Fire Suppression (AFS) Technology (Spraysafe.com), licensed by Unifire AB.

There are thousands of buildings around the world with highly flammable cladding and more fires are guaranteed to occur.

Where is the concern and action?
